Luke 15:4-7

4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

A shepherd normally counts his sheep toward the end of the day as he rounds them up to lead them home.  When one sheep is missing, there is no telling where the lost one went astray because the flock did not stay in one place the whole day.  Most shepherds would call out, and look around—without losing sight of the ninety-nine.  Not so, the Lord Jesus; He would leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the missing one.

But Jesus really is not talking about four-legged sheep but sheep in the church.  If a church does not do missions, the Great Shepherd will leave that church.  Therefore, we will carry on the work which the Lord has passed on to us.  As the Father sent Him, He has sent us.  We are saved to be sent.  Adam’s job was to tend the Garden of God.  Your job and my job are to go seek God’s lost children—our brothers and sisters who are living the lives we once lived and chasing the dreams we once dreamed.
